Custom Window Seat Cushions — Made to Your Exact Measurements

A bare window ledge is wasted potential. A custom window seat cushion from The Fluff Haus transforms any window alcove, bay window, or built-in bench into a cozy reading nook, a favorite lounging spot, or an elegant design feature. Every cushion is handcrafted to your exact measurements in our workshop in Hickory, North Carolina.

Window seats are rarely standard sizes. Bay windows curve. Dormers have odd angles. Built-in benches have walls on three sides. Off-the-shelf cushions won't fit — and a cushion that gaps at the edges or bunches in the middle defeats the purpose. That's why custom matters. The Fluff Haus measures, cuts, and sews each window seat cushion to the exact dimensions of your space.

  • Bay Window Cushions: Single continuous cushions or sectioned pieces that follow the angles of your bay window. We can create one cushion with angled cuts or multiple cushions that meet at the corners.
  • Dormer Window Cushions: Compact, deep cushions for dormer alcoves — often 18"–24" deep, perfect for a child's reading spot or a quiet retreat.
  • Built-In Bench Cushions: For window seats built into walls, mudrooms, or under stairs. Any length, depth, and thickness.
  • Reading Nook Cushions: Thick, plush cushions for dedicated reading spaces. We often recommend 4"–5" thickness with soft or medium foam for maximum lounging comfort.

Accurate measurements are essential for a perfect fit. Here's what we need:

  1. Width: Measure the full width of the seating area from wall to wall (or edge to edge). For bay windows, measure each angled section separately.
  2. Depth: Measure from the back wall to the front edge of the seat. If the seat has a lip or raised front edge, measure to where you want the cushion to end.
  3. Thickness: Most window seat cushions are 2"–5" thick. We recommend 3" for a sleek look, 4" for everyday comfort, and 5" for a plush lounging feel.
  4. Corners & Angles: Note any rounded corners, angled walls, or obstructions (hinges, outlets, etc.). Take photos from above showing the full seat area.
  5. For bay windows: Measure the angle where sections meet. A paper template (butcher paper or newspaper taped together) traced along the seat is the most reliable method for complex shapes.

Your fabric choice depends on the cushion's location and lifestyle:

Indoor Window Seat Fabrics

  • Cotton and linen blends for a natural, breathable feel
  • Velvet and chenille for luxurious texture
  • Performance fabrics for homes with kids and pets — stain-resistant and easy to clean

Sunroom & Outdoor-Adjacent

  • Solution-dyed acrylic (e.g., Sunbrella-type) for UV resistance and moisture protection
  • Indoor/outdoor performance fabrics that resist fading from direct sunlight

The right foam depends on how the seat will be used:

  • Soft (1.8 lb): Best for reading nooks and low-use decorative seats
  • Medium (2.2 lb): Ideal for everyday seating — breakfast nooks, kids' window perches, and daily-use benches
  • Firm (2.8 lb): Best for high-traffic seats and when you want the cushion to hold its shape precisely

All cushions include Dacron polyester wrap for rounded edges and a polished look. Read more in our Custom Cushion Foam Guide.

  • Add ties or Velcro: Window seat cushions benefit from non-slip backing or fabric ties to keep them in place
  • Coordinate with pillows: Pair your window seat cushion with complementary pillow covers and pillow inserts for a styled look
  • Consider storage: Many window seats have lift-up storage. We can add a handle or finger groove to the cushion front for easy lifting
