Custom Cushion Foam — Types, Densities & Expert Recommendations
Choosing the right foam is the single most important decision when ordering a custom cushion. The foam determines how your cushion feels, how long it lasts, and how it performs over years of daily use. At The Fluff Haus, we cut every piece of cushion foam to your exact dimensions in our workshop in Hickory, North Carolina, and we're here to help you choose the right density for your project.
Foam density is measured in pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft³) and tells you how much raw material is packed into the foam. Higher density means more material, more durability, and generally firmer support. But density alone doesn't tell the whole story — you also need to understand ILD (Indentation Load Deflection).
Density vs. ILD — What's the Difference?
- Density (lb/ft³): Measures the weight of the foam per cubic foot. Higher density = more durable and longer-lasting. A 2.2 lb foam will outlast a 1.5 lb foam by years.
- ILD (Indentation Load Deflection): Measures how much force (in pounds) it takes to compress the foam 25% of its thickness. Higher ILD = firmer feel. A foam with 44 ILD is significantly firmer to sit on than one with 24 ILD.
Think of it this way: density is about durability, ILD is about feel. A high-density foam can be soft if it has a low ILD. The Fluff Haus selects foam that pairs appropriate density with matching ILD for real-world comfort.
Soft — 1.8 lb Density, ~24 ILD
Our soft foam has a plush, sink-in feel that's perfect for:
- Back cushions and lumbar supports
- Reading nook window seats where comfort is priority
- Deep, loungy sofas designed for relaxing
- Guest room seating that prioritizes comfort over longevity
At 1.8 lb density, this foam is comfortable but will compress faster than our higher-density options under daily heavy use. Best for moderate-use applications.
Medium — 2.2 lb Density, ~32 ILD
Our most popular option. Medium foam strikes the ideal balance between comfort and support:
- Everyday sofa seat cushions — our #1 recommendation for living room sofas
- Bench cushions for breakfast nooks and entryways
- Window seat cushions with regular daily use
- Replacement couch cushions — typically better than the original foam
At 2.2 lb density, this foam holds up well under daily use for 7–10+ years. It gives when you sit but springs back when you stand up.
Firm — 2.8 lb Density, ~44 ILD
Our firm foam provides maximum support and the longest lifespan:
- Dining chair cushions — supportive for upright seating
- High-traffic commercial seating
- Bench seats in mudrooms and entryways
- Any cushion where structure and shape-retention are critical
- Boat and RV cushions
At 2.8 lb density, this foam can last 10–15+ years. It's not rock-hard — it still has give — but it won't flatten out or develop body impressions the way lighter foams can.
Every foam cushion from The Fluff Haus is wrapped in a layer of Dacron polyester batting before being inserted into its cover. Dacron wrap serves three important purposes:
- Softens the edges — eliminates the hard, boxy look of bare foam and creates gentle, rounded corners
- Adds a layer of cushion — creates a softer initial feel when you first sit down, even on firm foam
- Protects the foam — reduces friction between foam and fabric, extending the life of both
| Application | Recommended Foam | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sofa seat cushions | Medium (2.2 lb) | Best balance for daily sitting |
| Sofa back cushions | Soft (1.8 lb) | Comfort over support |
| Dining chairs | Firm (2.8 lb) | Upright support, shape retention |
| Window seat | Medium or Firm | Depends on daily use level |
| Bench cushion | Medium (2.2 lb) | Versatile for sitting and looks |
| Outdoor cushion | Medium (2.2 lb) | Good performance with weather exposure |
| Reading nook | Soft (1.8 lb) | Maximum comfort for lounging |
